The Ethereum , the second cryptocurrency capitalization currently available on the market, have recently been the headlines having reached the price of $ 3,000 per coin (currently $ 3,300 / ETH), making the creator, Vitalik Buterin , the youngest billionaire in history .
But perhaps not everyone knows that the origin of cryptocurrency must be sought within MMORPGs, and in particular on World of Warcraft .
Buterin, in fact, an avid player of the MMORPG Blizzard, was active from 2007 to 2010, playing a Warlock. In 2009, a Siphon Life spell nerf drove him to despair, and gave him the impetus to create Ethereum. In fact, the 27-year-old billionaire tells us:
I happily played World of Warcraft from 2007 to 2010, but one day Blizzard removed the damage component from my beloved Siphon Life spell. That night, I cried to sleep, and realized the horrors that centralized servers could be.
Blizzard’s decision to nerf Siphon Life led Vitalik to view decisions imposed from above, by a single, centralized server, as an imposition. From this, he developed the idea of creating a decentralized structure that would allow the exchange of data without having to be mediated by a single authority. Consequently, Ethereum was born.
I was in Russia in 1994 and moved to Canada in 2000, where I went to school. [After the Siphon Life nerf] in 2011 I was looking for a new meaning to give to my life. I discovered Bitcoins. At first I was skeptical, and didn’t understand how something could have value without there being a physical asset behind it. But slowly I began to take an interest in it more and more. I started writing for a blog called Bitcoin Weekly for $ 1.5 an hour, and soon, along with Mihai Alisie, co-founded Bitcoin Magazine.
In 2012, I entered the University of Waterloo; in 2013, I realized that cryptocurrency projects were taking away like 30 hours a week of my time, so I stopped dating. I explored the world while exploring various crypto projects, and finally realized that everyone was too focused on specific applications, losing the big picture. Hence Ethereum was born, which stole my life from that moment on.
Today, Ethereum is considered by many to be the most promising cryptocurrency, perhaps even superior to Bitcoin (especially in everyday practical use as an exchange currency). Vitalik, starting from that distant nerf, has forfeited a fortune, and today, from the top of his billion dollars, he can look back on that distant nerf as a starting point for something extraordinary.
